Title : Sedentary Time and Screen - based Sedentary Behaviours of Children with a Chronic Disease
نویسندگان
چکیده
The objectives of this study were to (i) assess sedentary time and prevalence of screen-based sedentary behaviours of children with a chronic disease and (ii) compare sedentary time and prevalence of screen-based sedentary behaviours to ageand sex-matched healthy controls. Sixty-five children (aged 6-18 years) with a chronic disease participated: survivors of a brain tumor, haemophilia, type 1 diabetes mellitus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, cystic fibrosis and Crohn’s disease. Twenty-nine of these participants were compared to ageand sex-matched healthy controls. Sedentary time was measured objectively by an ActiGraph GT1M or GT3X accelerometer worn for 7 consecutive days and defined as <100 counts per minute. A questionnaire was used to assess screen-based sedentary behaviours. Children with a chronic disease engaged in an average of 10.2±1.4 hours of sedentary time per day, which comprised 76.5±7.1% of average daily monitoring time. There were no differences between children with a chronic disease and controls in sedentary time (adjusted for wear time, p=0.06) or in the prevalence of TV watching, and computer or video game usage for varying durations (p=0.78, p=0.39 and, p=0.32 respectively). Children with a chronic disease, though relatively healthy, accumulate high levels of sedentary time, similar to those of their healthy peers. “Sedentary Time and Screen-based Sedentary Behaviours of Children with a Chronic Disease” by Walker RG et al. متن کاملContribution of the After-School Period to Children’s Daily Participation in Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviours
OBJECTIVES Children's after-school physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviours (SB) are not well understood, despite the potential this period holds for intervention. This study aimed to describe children's after-school physical activity and sedentary behaviours; establish the contribution this makes to daily participation and to achieving physical activity and sedentary behaviours guidelin...
متن کاملThe health impact of sedentary behaviour in children and youth.
Emerging evidence suggests that sedentary behaviour is independently associated with cardiometabolic disease risk in school-aged children and youth. This thesis includes 4 related studies in the pursuit of 2 objectives: (i) To determine the cross-sectional association of sedentary time, interruptions in sedentary time, sedentary bout length, and total movement variability with markers of cardio...
متن کاملSedentary behaviour as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in pediatric age
The term “sedentary” has historically been used to refer to individuals with low physical activity levels or not meeting some criterion level of physical activity. According to the recent findings, sedentary behaviour has been defined not simply as the absence of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, but as a class of behaviours (e.g. sitting, watching TV or playing video games) characterized...
متن کاملExploring parents' screen-viewing behaviours and sedentary time in association with their attitudes toward their young child's screen-viewing
Sedentary time and screen-viewing (SV) are associated with chronic disease risk in adults. Parent and child sedentary time and SV are associated. Parents influence children's SV through parenting styles and role modelling. Understanding whether parents' attitudes toward child SV are associated with their own SV and sedentary time will aid development of family interventions to reduce sedentary ...
